I revisited Michelin Listed L’Ardente last weekend, the glam Italian product of chef David Deshaies, who also is behind Unconvential Diner, a fellow Michelin listed restaurant I visited a few months ago. This was my second time at L’Ardente and while I ordered some of the items from my first visit such as their iconic forty layer lasagna, I also ordered some new ones. Namely, I ordered their “Duck Hunt” as an appetizer as it was recommended by my waiter in my first visit and I passed on it. After taking just one bite, I discovered that it was my mistake. The “Duck Hunt” starter consists of green raviolis stuffed with tender duck and features foie gras and truffle. Two words: stunning decadence. It was sincerely one of the better appetizers I have ever had. It was rich and indulgent while incredibly smooth and satisfying. It came served in little egg shaped cups with toy webbed duck feet to provide a base for an exciting combination of brilliant execution and playful fun. Anyways, if you do go to L’Ardente and I highly recommend it, although it is rather pricey, you simply cannot make the mistake I did and miss out on this showstopper of a dish. It’s one of the best appetizers in DC and with no question, one of the premier starters in the Italian scene in the city. For a cheaper option, you could try the focaccia as well for a third of the price (duck hunt is 24, focaccia is 9). It’s closer to a rustic loaf than a traditional focaccia but it’s a simple and familiar option if you’re on a budget.
