This past weekend, the College Football Playoff committee made their selections for the four teams that will compete in the semi-finals for a chance to win the national championship. They selected Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama. They did not, however, select the Seminoles of Florida State. Yes, the same Florida State that went undefeated in the twelve games they competed in. Yes, the same Florida State that played in a power five conference (ACC) and won it by defeating Louisville in Charlotte, NC this past Saturday. Here’s the thing about it: the committee had two options for navigating who they should select to play on New Year’s Day. The first option would be to select the most deserving four teams and the second option would be to select the best overall four teams. Now, here’s the issue: they did neither. Florida State became the first undefeated power five champion to not make the playoffs since they began in 2014, presumably because of Jordan Travis’s injury. Florida State certainly is among the most deserving in the nation. After all, what else could they have done? They won all their games and won their conference. In their place, Alabama got the fourth seed. Alabama, on the other hand, is one of the four best teams but not one of the four most deserving. However, the University of Georgia, who have more national championships than losses in the last three years, were left out following their defeat in the SEC Championship game. I think we all know that UGA is one of the four best teams but they didn’t make it. Regardless of how your look at the situation, the committee failed to do their jobs effectively and have therefore, lost all integrity and credibility. On another note, it’s really too bad we didn’t have the 12 team playoff this year as this would have been the perfect year to have it. Teams that are certainly among the best such as Florida State, Ohio State, Georgia, and Oregon would all have had their fair opportunity to compete. As for the 12 team concept, that will have to wait until next year.
